Engaging youth in philanthropy

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of the Community Foundation is comprised of high school students representing Fremont, Grant, Hesperia, Newaygo, and White Cloud public high schools and the homeschooling community. Each school has representation from grades 9-12.

YAC members—casually known as “YACers”—advise the board on issues regarding area youth and evaluate YAC grant applications. Students meet at the Community Foundation once a month to learn about philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, prepare for grant review, develop leadership skills, and have fun!

Since our YAC began in 1994, more than 220 youth have served on the committee and they have granted more than $1.3 million to address the needs of local youth. Visit our YAC grant page to learn more about YAC’s funding priorities and how to apply for a grant. Applications are due on March 1 each year.

For more information about YAC, contact advisors Patti Wheater and Maria Gonzalez.

Interested in joining YAC?

YAC is looking for responsible students with leadership potential, positive attitudes, and a desire to be part of a team.

We have openings for up to two new representatives from each school: one incoming 9th grader (in fall 2024) and one student who can be in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade next year.

Applications are now being accepted. To learn more and apply, click here.
