General tips
Remember, your scholarship application helps us get to know you. Give it the time and attention it deserves. Some tips:
- Complete all sections
- Read and follow instructions carefully
- Proofread your work
- Misinformation or leaving areas blank (such as high school you attend, activities you are involved in, etc.) may disqualify you from consideration from some or all scholarships
- Be punctual. No applications will be accepted after March 1
Essay tips
Your personal essay may be the most challenging part of your application, but it also gives you a chance to stand out from the crowd.
The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific. Include details about yourself so that the reader gets to know you and what you stand for. Be truthful and honest.
Our scholarship selection committees review hundreds of essays. It’s up to you to get their attention! Some tips:
- Think before you write.
Brainstorm ideas and create an outline before you begin writing. Know what you are trying to say and stay focused. - Be original and creative.
Choose a topic that will highlight you and write in your own voice. Share personal thoughts and stories. Include specific details, examples, and reasons to develop your ideas. - Read your essay carefully and check spelling and grammar. Enlist a friend, parent, or teacher to proofread. Don’t rely on your computer’s spell check to catch every mistake.
Interview tips
Some scholarships require applicants to participate in a face-to-face interview. Here are some suggestions to help:
- Dress appropriately. A scholarship interview is similar to a job interview.
- Be on time. Know where you’re going and when you need to be there.
- Be prepared. Know the scholarship criteria and be prepared to talk about how you meet it. Be ready to talk about your personal goals, college/career goals, and academic achievements.
- Be honest and brief. Answer questions truthfully and thoroughly, but recognize that not every question requires a long answer.
- Listen to questions carefully. It is okay to take a moment to think before answering a question. Ask for clarification if needed.
- The interviewer is on your side and wants you to succeed!
